Rivers mark borders between neighboring villages, but at the same time link remote communities, even nations, as they flow through the countryside. Since the Unified Shilla Kingdom, Korean rivers have brought the people living on the Korean peninsula closer together. Rivers are at the center of Korean life, a source of physical and spiritual nourishment.

The North Han River originates in the Kemgang Mountain of Kangwon Province. The South Han River originates in the Kemdae Mountain area of Kangwon Province. They meet at Yangsu-ri in Kyonggi Province. The Han River finally flows into the Yellow Sea after passing through the Kimpo Plain.

강은 이웃 마을 사이의 경계를 표시하지만 동시에 시골을 통해 흐르면서 멀리 떨어진 공동체, 심지어 국가까지 연결한다. 통일신라 이후 한강은 한반도에 사는 사람들을 더 가깝게 만들었다. 강은 우리 삶의 중심이자 육체적 정신적 자양분의 원천이다.

북한강은 강원도 금강산에서 발원한다. 남한강은 강원도 금대산 일대에서 발원한다. 경기도 양수리에서 만납니다. 한강은 김포평야를 거쳐 마침내 서해로 흘러든다.

At present, there are 32 bridges for road transportation and five beidges for trains that cross the Han River. The Han River plays a significant role as a source of water for nearby cities, such as Seoul, Chunchon, and Wonju.

현재 한강을 가로지르는 도로교통용 다리는 32개, 기차용 베지는 5개가 있다. 한강은 서울, 춘천, 원주 등 인근 도시의 물 공급원으로서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다.

The downstream region which forms a major plain in the middle of the peninsula has been a central area for new cultures since ancient times and of strategic military importance particularly in the Three Kingdoms Period. Moreover, the Han River, like a human bloodstream, was critical for transporting people and goods during the Choson Dynasty.

한반도 중앙의 대평야를 형성하는 하류지역은 고대부터 새로운 문화의 중심지역이었으며 특히 삼국시대에는 전략적 군사적 요충지였다. 더욱이 한강은 사람의 핏줄처럼 조선시대 사람과 물자를 수송하는 중요한 역할을 했다.

Place of the Origin

Komryongso, a spring five meters in diameter, is the source of the South Han River. A total of 3,000 tons of water flow from Komryongso, located in Kumdae-dong, a nature preservation area, each day. The temperature of the water remains around 9ºC, regardless of the season.

직경 5m의 샘물인 검룡소는 남한강의 발원지이다. 자연보호구역인 금대동에 위치한 검룡소에서 하루에 총 3,000톤의 물이 흘러나온다. 물의 온도는 계절에 관계없이 9ºC 정도를 유지하고 있다.

There is a pavilion at the entrance to the spring that was constructed to celebrate its discovery as the origin of the South Han River in 1989. Next to the pavilion, there is a monument with the inscription "the Han River, the Korea people's milk, rises from here, a place having spirits coming from the Taebaek Mountain." The name Komryongso, derives from a myth that a snake living in the Yellow Sea went to become a dragon, and it left a strain on the rocks while twisting its body to rise.

1989년 남한강의 발원지 발견을 기념하기 위해 건립한 샘물 입구에는 정자가 있다. 여기에서 솟아오르는 곳, 태백산에서 오는 영혼들이 있는 곳." 검룡소라는 이름은 서해에 살던 뱀이 용이 되기 위해 몸을 비틀면서 바위에 힘줄을 남기고 올라갔다는 신화에서 유래되었다.
